Supplication
Dua — 8th Moharram (Laila Husain — Night of Loyalty)
8th of Moharram — Imam Husain asked for one night to spend in prayer and preparation. That night, he addressed his companions, released them from their pledge of loyalty, urged them to leave under cover of darkness, and extinguished the lamps. Every single companion refused to leave. They pledged themselves to the Imam anew, saying: 'We would not wish to survive you.'
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ — لَيْلَةُ الثَّامِنِ مِنَ الْمُحَرَّمِ — هِيَ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي طَفَّأَ فِيهَا مَوْلاَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ الْمَصَابِيحَ وَخَاطَبَ أَصْحَابَهُ فِي الظَّلاَمِ قَائِلًا: «لَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنِّي ذِمَامٌ، اذْهَبُوا فِي حِلٍّ» فَرَدُّوا عَلَيْهِ بِصَوْتٍ وَاحِدٍ: «وَاللَّهِ لاَ نُفَارِقُكَ وَلاَ نُخَيِّبُكَ وَلاَ نَزَالُ مَعَكَ» يَا إِلَهِي تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةُ لَيْلَةُ الْوَفَاءِ الَّذِي لاَ يُشْبِهُهُ وَفَاءٌ وَلَيْلَةُ الصِّدْقِ الَّذِي جَاوَزَ حُدُودَ الْحِسَابِ لَمَّا قَالَ الأَصْحَابُ: «مَا أَحْسَنَ الْمَوْتَ فِي سَبِيلِكَ يَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ» اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ الْحُسَيْنَ قَضَى تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ فِي الصَّلاَةِ وَالذِّكْرِ وَتِلاَوَةِ الْقُرْآنِ يُعِدُّ نَفْسَهُ لِلِقَاءِ رَبِّهِ لاَ لِلنَّوْمِ وَالرَّاحَةِ فَاجْعَلْنَا مِمَّنْ يَعْبُدُكَ فِي لَيَالِيهِمْ كَمَا عَبَدَكَ إِمَامُنَا الْحُسَيْنُ اللَّهُمَّ امْنَحْنَا وَفَاءَ أَصْحَابِ الْحُسَيْنِ الَّذِينَ آثَرُوا الْمَوْتَ مَعَ إِمَامِهِمْ عَلَى الْحَيَاةِ مَعَ الظَّالِمِينَ وَاجْعَلْنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا عَلَى وَلاَيَتِهِمْ وَفِي الآخِرَةِ فِي صُحْبَتِهِمْ بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ وَصَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ الطَّاهِرِينَ
Allāhumma inna hādhihi l-laylah — laylatuth-thāmini minal-muḥarram — Hiya l-laylatullatī ṭaffaʾa fīhā mawlānā l-Ḥusaynu l-maṣābīḥ Wa khāṭaba aṣḥābahu fiẓ-ẓalāmi qāʾilan: «Laysa ʿalaykum minnī dhimām, idhabū fī ḥill» Fa-raddū ʿalayhi bi-ṣawtin wāḥid: «Wallāhi lā nufāriquka wa lā nukhayyibuka wa lā nazālu maʿak» Yā ilāhī tilka l-laylatulaylatual-wafāʾil-ladhī lā yushbihuhū wafāʾ Wa laylatauṣ-ṣidqil-ladhī jāwaza ḥudūdal-ḥisāb Lammā qāla l-aṣḥāb: «Mā aḥsana l-mawta fī sabīlika yābnar-rasūlillāh» Allāhumma innal-Ḥusayna qaḍā tilka l-laylata fiṣ-ṣalāti wadh-dhikri wa tilāwatil-Qurʾān Yuʿiddu nafsahu li-liqāʾi rabbihī lā lin-nawmi war-rāḥah Fajʿalnā mimman yaʿbuduka fī layālīhim kamā ʿabadaka imāmunā l-Ḥusayn Allāhumma am naḥnā wafāʾa aṣḥābi l-Ḥusaynil-ladhīna ātharu l-mawta maʿa imāmihim ʿAlal-ḥayāti maʿaẓ-ẓālimīn Wajʿalnā fid-dunyā ʿalā walāyatihim wa fil-ākhirati fī ṣuḥbatihim Bi-raḥmatika yā arḥamar-rāḥimīn Wa ṣallallāhu ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ālihiṭ-ṭāhirīn
O Allah, this night — the night of the eighth of Moharram — is the night our master Husain extinguished the lamps, and in the darkness addressed his companions, saying: 'You owe me no oath — go in peace.' And they replied with one voice: 'By Allah, we will not leave you, we will not disappoint you, we will remain with you.' O my God, that night was the night of loyalty unlike any loyalty, and the night of truthfulness that transcended all calculation, when the companions said: 'How beautiful is death in your path, O son of the Messenger of Allah.' O Allah, Husain spent that night in prayer, dhikr, and recitation of Quran — preparing himself to meet his Lord, not for sleep and rest. Make us among those who worship You in their nights as our Imam Husain worshipped You. O Allah, grant us the loyalty of Husain's companions who chose death alongside their Imam over life alongside the oppressors. And make us in this world upon their wilayah, and in the next in their company. By Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful. And may Allah bless Muhammad and his pure family.
