Dua Iftitah — The Opening Supplication of Ramadan

Allāhumma innī aftatiḥu th-thanāʾa bi-ḥamdika Wa anta musaddidun liṣ-ṣawābi bi-mannik Wa ayqantu annaka anta arḥamur-rāḥimīn Fī mawḍiʿil-ʿafwi war-raḥmah Wa ashaddul-muʿāqibīna fī mawḍiʿin-nakāli wan-niqmah Wa aʿẓamul-mutajabbīrīna fī mawḍiʿil-kibriyāʾi wal-ʿaẓamah Allāhumma adhinta lī fī duʿāʾika wa masʾalatik Fasmaʿ yā samīʿu midḥatī Wa ajib yā raḥīmu daʿwatī Wa aqil yā ghafūru ʿathratī Fakam yā ilāhī min kurbatin qad farrajtahā Wa kam min hammin qad kashaftah Wa kam min ʿathratin qad aqaltahā Wa kam min raḥmatin qad nashartahā Wa kam min ḥalqati balāʾin qad fakaktahā Allāhumma lakal-ḥamdu ʿalā mā anʿamta bihī ʿalay Min islāmin wa īmānin wa mā aṣabtu min khayrid-dunyā wal-ākhirah Allāhumma antal-awwalu fa-laysa qablaka shayʾ Wa antal-ākhiru fa-laysa baʿdaka shayʾ Wa anẓ-ẓāhiru fa-laysa fawqaka shayʾ Wa antal-bāṭinu fa-laysa dūnaka shayʾ Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammadin nabiyyika wa rasūlik Khiyaratika min ḵhalqik Wa ʿalā ahli baytihi ṭ-ṭayyibīna ṭ-ṭāhirīn Alladhīna adhhabta ʿanhumu r-rijsa wa ṭahhartahum taṭhīrā Allāhumma jʿaliṣ-ṣawma lanā junnatan minal-ʿadhāb Waṣ-ṣalāta lanā qurbatan ilayk Wadh-dhikra lanā unsan minal-waḥshah Wat-tilāwata lanā nūran fid-dunyā wal-ākhirah Allāhumma inna hādha shahru ramaḍāna lladhī anzalta fīhil-qurʾān Hudan lin-nāsi wa bayyinātin minal-hudā wal-furqān Wa jaʿaltahu shahra ṣ-ṣiyāmi wal-qiyām Wa shahra l-ināba wat-tawbah Wa shahra t-tasbīḥi wat-tahlīli wat-takbīri wat-taḥmīd Allāhumma urzuqnī fīhi faḍla laylati l-qadr Wajʿal lī fīhi ṣiyāman khāliṣan wa qiyāman maqbūlā Waghfir lī dhunūbis-sālifata waʿṣimnī mimmā yaʾtī Wakhtim lī fīhi bir-riḍwāni wal-maghfirah Allāhumma innī asʾaluka khayra hādha sh-shahr Wa khayra mā fīhi wa mā huwa bāqin minh Wa aʿūdhu bika min sharri hādha sh-shahr Wa sharri mā fīhi wa sharri mā huwa bāqin minh Allāhumma urzuqnil-īmānad-dāʾima wal-yaqīna ṣ-ṣādiq Wat-tawbatan-naṣūḥa qablal-mawt War-rāḥata ʿindal-mawt Wal-maghfirata baʿdal-mawt Wa ṣallillāhumma ʿalā sayyidinā Muḥammadin wa ālihiṭ-ṭāhirīn Wa sallim taslīman kathīrā

O Allah, I open my praise with Your glorification. You are the One who guides to what is right by Your grace. I am certain that You are the Most Merciful of the merciful in the place of forgiveness and mercy, the Most Severe in punishment in the place of retribution and vengeance, the Greatest in might in the place of magnificence and greatness. O Allah, You have permitted me to call upon You and ask of You. So hear, O All-Hearing, my praise. Answer, O Most Merciful, my supplication. Pardon, O All-Forgiving, my slip. How many griefs, O my God, have You relieved for me, how many sorrows have You removed, how many slips have You forgiven, how many mercies have You spread over me, how many chains of affliction have You broken. O Allah, all praise is Yours for what You have bestowed upon me of Islam, of faith, and of whatever good of this world and the next I have been given. O Allah, You are the First — nothing is before You. You are the Last — nothing is after You. You are the Manifest — nothing is above You. You are the Hidden — nothing is beneath You. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad, Your prophet and messenger, Your chosen one from Your creation, and upon his pure and purified family — from whom You removed all impurity and whom You purified completely. O Allah, make fasting a shield for us from punishment, make prayer a means of nearness to You, make remembrance a comfort against loneliness, and make recitation a light for us in this world and the next. O Allah, this is the month of Ramadan in which You sent down the Quran — a guidance for mankind and clear proofs of guidance and the Criterion. You made it the month of fasting and night-prayer, the month of turning back and repentance, the month of glorification, declaration of Your oneness, magnification, and praise. O Allah, grant me in this month the blessing of Laylat al-Qadr. Give me in it sincere fasting and an accepted night-prayer. Forgive my past sins and protect me from what is to come. Seal it for me with Your good pleasure and forgiveness. O Allah, I ask You for the good of this month, the good of what is in it and what remains of it. And I seek refuge with You from the evil of this month, the evil of what is in it and what remains of it. O Allah, grant me steadfast faith and true certainty, genuine repentance before death, ease at the time of death, and forgiveness after death. And send blessings, O Allah, upon our master Muhammad and his pure family, and abundant peace.
