Al-Lawh al-Mahfuz (اللَّوح المَحفُوظ — the Preserved Tablet, from *l-w-h* meaning tablet/plank and *h-f-z* meaning to preserve/guard) is the Quranic concept of the divine record in which all of creation — every event, every word, every soul's destiny — has been written before creation began. The Quran: *'Nay, but it is a glorious Quran, in a Preserved Tablet (*fi lawhin mahfuz*).'* (85:21-22) The Tablet is the complete divine foreknowledge rendered as a cosmic record — everything that was, is, and will be is registered there before time began. In Islamic theology, the Preserved Tablet is one of the foundational concepts of qadar (divine decree) — Allah's complete, eternal knowledge of all creation. The hadith: *'The first thing Allah created was the Pen (*al-Qalam*), and He said to it: Write. It said: What shall I write? He said: Write the destiny of all things until the Hour.'* The Pen and the Tablet form a paired cosmic couple in the Islamic imagination of primordial divine recording. In Ismaili ta'wil, the Lawh al-Mahfuz corresponds to the Imam's comprehensive 'ilm — the living Tablet of divine guidance in each era.

The Quran’s Preserved Tablet

The Quran in the Tablet: “Nay, but it is a glorious Quran, in a Preserved Tablet.” (85:21-22) — The Quran itself, in its most ultimate form, dwells in the Preserved Tablet — what reaches human beings through the Prophet is the revelation from this primordial divine record. The Tablet is the source; the revealed Quran in human language is the earthly expression of that source.

The Tablet of everything: The Quran speaks of everything being in a record: “And there is nothing but that with Us are its treasuries (khaza’inuhu), and We do not send it down except in a known measure.” (15:21) The Preserved Tablet as the comprehensive divine record of all possibilities and actualities — the ultimate expression of divine ‘ilm al-mutlaq (absolute knowledge).

The Pen and the Tablet

The primordial pair: The Prophet: “The first thing Allah created was the Pen. He said to it: Write. It asked: What shall I write? He said: Write the destinies of all things until the Hour.” (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi) — The Pen (al-Qalam) and the Tablet (al-Lawh) form a primordial cosmic couple: the Pen writes; the Tablet receives and preserves. Everything that will happen in creation is already written in their primordial transaction.

Connection to Night of Power: The Quran: “Indeed We sent it down on the Night of Power.” (97:1) — The Quran’s descent from the Preserved Tablet to the earthly realm occurred on Laylat al-Qadr. The Tablet is the divine realm; Laylat al-Qadr is the moment of contact between that divine realm and the human world through revelation.

Ismaili Ta’wil — The Imam as Living Tablet

The Imam’s comprehensive ‘ilm: In Ismaili ta’wil, the Lawh al-Mahfuz corresponds to the Imam — the living repository of divine ‘ilm in each era. Just as the Tablet contains the record of all creation, the Imam’s knowledge (‘ilm al-ladunni, divinely given knowledge) encompasses what is needed for the community’s guidance. The Imam is the living Tablet; the Da’i is the Pen that transmits his ‘ilm to the community.
